What’s a fun fact about you?

I used to be an extreme couponer and the stores had to pay me!

Why did you start your creator journey?

Honestly, I started because I was looking for financial and time freedom so I could have more flexibility with my family. I know I don’t want to rely on a traditional path forever and I plan to retire early!

I first had a short-term rental business which then led to a content studio, and both naturally involved staging (setting up spaces, making them feel lived in, welcoming, and visually appealing). I learned about product UGC from some of the creators using the studio and tried it, but realized real quick I hated it. What I did enjoy was documenting my travel experiences. I was already capturing trips anyway, and I slowly realized there was a real need for travel and hospitality content specifically.

It ended up connecting everything I had already been doing with staging, lifestyle setups, and hospitality. I genuinely love this niche of content because I get to use my creative side in a space I enjoy, while still working toward the freedom I originally started for.

What do you enjoy most about your BTA Family?

I’m still new, but even in the short time I’ve been part of it I’ve really enjoyed the community. Being around other Black travel creators and people who are doing similar work as me has been encouraging. There’s a level of understanding there and it just feels good to be around people who relate to the same goals and experiences.

What is your favorite travel destination?

Costa Rica. I still remember waking up early to an open balcony, hearing birds chirping, the waves crashing, and the wrestling of trees in the rainforest. It was so quiet and peaceful being in nature. And the view was honestly breathtaking. And I can’t forget how fresh and amazing the food was. Costa Rica really introduced me to the idea of slow living and experiencing a place instead of rushing through it. It also ended up being my first travel deal (one I didn’t even think I would get). So that trip means a lot to me for both personal and creator reasons!

Who inspires you to keep going (i.e family, friends, creator, celebrity, etc)?

My family, especially my kids. I want them to grow up seeing the world as something they belong in, not something that feels out of reach. I also want them to see entrepreneurship up close. I want them to know and see that they can conquer their dreams and be successful. And a lot of times I keep going because I know someone else is watching quietly and realizing they can try too.

What is a piece of advice you would give some starting out on their creator journey?

Start before you feel ready. Most people wait until they feel confident or have everything figured out, and that moment rarely comes. I always say “fake it till you make it,” because YOU WILL! You grow into it by doing it! And that’s with anything in life.

Something practical I would suggest:

Go look at your own page like you don’t know yourself. If you landed on your profile for the first time, would you understand what you post and why you should follow in about 10 seconds? If not, fix three things right away: make your bio clear about what you share, use your pinned posts to introduce yourself and what people can expect, and make sure your recent posts relate to each other. A lot of creators think they have a content problem when really people are just confused. When your page makes sense and we know what we are going to get, we stay.

To go even further: commit to posting three times a week for 60 days. Respond to every comment and pay attention to the questions people ask you. Those questions will show you what your audience actually values from you, and that becomes your niche and your offering. Brands look for creators who are authentic and who understand their audience. Plus this’ll help increase your engagement, reach and knowledge of that platform. And you start to get in a routine, because consistency is key.

What is something you are most proud of?

I’m proud that I kept going and built this while being a wife, a mom of four, and working a 9-5. I learned pitching, branding, storytelling, and partnerships along the way. I also tend to lose interest easily, so choosing consistency and continuing to grow was a big personal accomplishment for me. Now I’ve been able to work with travel brands and destinations across multiple countries and create opportunities not only for myself but for other creators as well.

Last question…Is there anything you would like to see in the BTA community? Any workshops, events, content, etc.? Tell us your ideas!

I would love to attend a hands-on, practical learning especially a tangible workshop or course focused on creating strong “hooks” and stopping the scroll. That’s an area I personally want to grow in, and I’m always open to learning and improving my content. I also really like that BTA already creates opportunities for members to connect in real life, like the creator meetups/fam trips (like the Boston one). I think it’s really valuable that members actually get to travel and build relationships in person. I also enjoyed Wavelength. There was a lot of useful information in that. I’d also love to see more regional meetups or events in my city, Huntsville, Alabama. There are a lot of creatives here, but our city sometimes gets overlooked in the creator space, and I think BTA bringing something here would make a real impact and introduce the community to new voices. Looking forward to being part of it and seeing everyone soon!

What’s a fun fact about you?

I am a horror, Syfy and Fantasy lover.

Why did you start your creator journey?

I started my creator journey in 2014 as a Facebook Group – Meals and Miles. People thought we were rich (false) because we traveled often and ate well. I wanted to show people they could travel as well with proper planning and staying within their budget.

What do you enjoy most about your BTA Family?

All of the knowledge we have access to via the webinar, community post, and events. Also, everyone is so encouraging and engaging whether it’s within the app, webinars or with your content.

What is your favorite travel destination?

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico (The people are so welcoming and loving there. I always feel at ease and safe in Puerto Vallarta.)

Who inspires you to keep going (i.e family, friends, creator, celebrity, etc)?

My family and friends are my biggest inspiration and supporters. Even when I think my creation are terrible they are always cheering me on.

What is a piece of advice you would give some starting out on their creator journey?

Find your voice and be authentic. There will always be people telling you to do it a certain way but you have to stay true to yourself. You will find your audience. It may just take some time.

What is something you are most proud of?

I am proud that I did not give up on me. There were times where I felt like I wasn’t good enough or creative enough for people to want to follow me or my content. I tried to replicate what others were doing, but I felt fake. I checked out mentally for a while. When I checked back in, I said, okay I am doing this my way now. It might not be as pretty or well put together but it will be the true version of myself. Being myself has opened doors I didn’t see coming.

What’s a fun fact about you?

I spent my 20’s living abroad- solo.

Why did you start your creator journey?

I truly believe that travel will heal us all and I want to share it with everyone!! By traveling, we gain perspective and perspective breeds empathy…and isn’t that what the world needs?

What do you enjoy most about your BTA Family?

Finding connection and support from people who get it.

What is your favorite travel destination?

Impossible to choose. I have learned so much from so many people in so many amazing destinations.

The people who haven’t told their story yet.

Always say yes and stay curious!

My kids. Hearing them share their travel experiences is pretty cool…But also, telling stories that resonate with a previously unheard audience on some solid platforms. I’m proud of my bylines, I guess.

Meet Latisha Williams…

What’s a fun fact about you?

My name, Latisha, means JOY!! So, being Your Black Joy Guide is not just a title, it’s purpose!! :)

Why did you start your creator journey?

I honestly don’t remember a time when I didn’t have a creator journey. I’ve always been the type to do interesting things and I’ve always been the type to share those things. I LOVE sharing resources, cool and fun things and of course…Joy!! Creating and sharing is how I connect with people.

What do you enjoy most about your BTA Family?

I LOVE the supportive community in BTA!! It’s full of information and resources that is freely and generously shared and I truly believe that everyone here wants to see US all win. What stands out most is that BTA doesn’t just ask the industry for alliance, amplification, and accountability—it models it for its members. It’s created a space where creators like me can truly belong, be seen, and be supported. I love that!!

What is your favorite travel destination?

Wow!! I have never been able to definitively answer this because I appreciate being able to travel and every destination has shown me something different. My top three though, I’d say Cartagena because of all the love shown to me there; Panama because of the sheer ease I felt and Curaçao for its beauty and underrated strength. In all these places, I loved seeing so many Black faces and they felt like home.

Who inspires you to keep going (i.e family, friends, creator, celebrity, etc)?

I’m mostly inspired other Black travelers and Creators. Yet, another reason I love BTA!! Additionally, my daughter, who’s a traveler herself, is my biggest cheerleader. My favorite cousin, who isn’t even on social media, still finds ways to support and promote me. Lastly, ANYONE who personally tells me that my videos/posts have helped or inspired them in some way. That’s so touching and that feedback is music to a Creator’s ears…and inspiration to keep creating.

What is a piece of advice you would give some starting out on their creator journey?

Your voice is YOURS, and it’s a unique perspective worthy of being shared. So don’t overthink it, underestimate it or dismiss it. You matter and there are people waiting to hear your voice.

What is something you are most proud of?

A few years ago, I found a policy at work that would allow me to take off up to six months without a reason. While it was an unpaid policy, because I had the time available, I got them to pay me. So, I took off 10 weeks to rest and rejuvenate. I moved to Mexico for that time period and went bopping around several cities. It changed my life all because I had the audacity to choose rest and myself.

I would love to see a workshop on how to interpret and leverage analytics. Also, I’d love to learn more techniques on pitching. Thank you so much for this opportunity!! Meet Mei White…

What’s a fun fact about you?

Three years ago, I was interviewed and published by digital magazine, The Luna Collective for the release of my debut single as a budding singer-songwriter and audio producer. It was my first accomplishment since graduating from college and signified the importance of taking leaps of faith. Leading up to that moment, I pivoted from my pursuit of academia to a life of creativity, and it was like I needed that magazine article to validate the difficult choices I made in starting over.

Why did you start your creator journey?

I was coming to my wit’s end! I was in a really dark place during the pandemic—hated my job, most broke I’d ever been, no friends, and getting over a breakup. I spent a great deal of time hiking, taking long walks, and visiting the ocean to the point that I began documenting my trips and posting about wellness on my social media. That period of incubation gave me the strength I needed to be okay with starting fresh. After several years of taking classes and throwing myself into different projects, I’m so much closer to where I want to be in media.

What do you enjoy most about your BTA Family?

I love learning from them! I’m young and still building capital. I haven’t yet built my foundation to travel without being in survival mode, and with that, I rely on the honest info and testimonies from other BTA members for when I can travel more consistently in the future.

What is your favorite travel destination?

Hong Kong

Who inspires you to keep going (i.e family, friends, creator, celebrity, etc)?

My mom! A few years ago, my mom left the states to become a full-time caretaker to her parents in Hong Kong, and it completely changed my mentality around my career and what it means to feel at home with myself. I’m technically first (born) generation on my mom’s side, and with no siblings, conversations about providing and having certain freedoms are very real for me. My mom inspires me to not give up!

What is a piece of advice you would give some starting out on their creator journey?

Never stop making things.

What is something you are most proud of?

I feel most proud when I’ve helped others bring their projects to life. I’m based in the Bay Area, and I recently partnered with a video production studio in San Jose. I’ve managed to connect two awesome Black creators to this studio so far, and we’re exploring opportunities to film and animate their projects.

Meet Aspen Cierra Evans…

What’s a fun fact about you?

I was born in Honolulu, Hawaii!

Why did you start your creator journey?

I’ve been a photographer for 15 years but started combining my love for the craft with my love for travel in 2021 when I went on my first international trip to my maternal family’s home country of Belize. I realized then that I loved experiencing and sharing new cultures through my lens. Now with social media, I can share my work and the behind-the-scenes as I travel the world with my camera.

What do you enjoy most about your BTA Family?

I’ve appreciate how warm and inviting everyone has been since I joined. I love being in a space of like minded people.

What is your favorite travel destination?

I’ll have to say its a tie between Iceland and Japan. Both are completely out of this world destinations that exceeded any expectation I had.

Who inspires you to keep going (i.e family, friends, creator, celebrity, etc)?

With the travel photography space being heavily white male dominated, there weren’t many Black women that I saw pursuing this path. But when I came across Hasselblad Heroine Lola Akinmade and how she carved a name for herself in the space, I realized that with hard work and tenacity, it was possible. Her journey inspired me to be a part of the growing number of Black women changing what the perception of a travel photographer looks like.

What is a piece of advice you would give some starting out on their creator journey?

Do it because you enjoy it. That’s what’s going to get you through the hard times, sleepless nights, algorithm changes, economic downturns and more.

What is something you are most proud of?

I’m most proud of being awarded a photography grant from Black Women Photographers and Nikon in 2024. That kickstarted my first travel photography adventure in Iceland to see the Northern Lights. Winning that grant gave me the confidence to share the world through my lens and plan a part 2 to that trip for 2026. Stay Tuned!

Meet Reese Johnson…

What’s a fun fact about you?

I used to be a plus-size fashion blogger before the pandemic!

Why did you start your creator journey?

I started my content journey through a private Facebook group where I taught people how to travel nearly freely using credit card points and miles. It began as a hobby and quickly evolved into a full business and I started researching ways to monetize.

Over time, I expanded beyond points and miles to include all things travel, lifestyle, and finance.

What do you enjoy most about your BTA Family?

What I love most about the BTA community is the genuine support, transparency, and opportunities that come from being part of it. I’d heard so much about TBEX and was on the fence about attending, but when I saw BTA offering a complimentary ticket, I was able to receive one. It was one of the best travel conferences I’ve attended so far.

Because of this community, I now have a complete media kit and pitch deck, and have built meaningful connections with creators like Tomiko Harvey and Nadine Duncan, who were both incredibly open and generous with their advice. That kind of authentic support is rare — and invaluable — especially as a Black woman creator growing in this space.

What is your favorite travel destination?

Anguilla, Japan, and Thailand – I can’t just pick one lol

Who inspires you to keep going (i.e family, friends, creator, celebrity, etc)?

My grandmother, she made sure we saw the world as kids and sparked my love for travel early on. I carry that same spirit with me, but now on a much larger scale.

I’m also inspired by other creators who continue to push boundaries and create new lanes in this space.

What is a piece of advice you would give some starting out on their creator journey?

Lead with passion and stay consistent. Post your content — don’t overthink it. You’ll evolve and improve along the way.

Always do your research, invest in your craft, and most importantly, network, network, network. Get in the rooms, attend conferences, and put yourself out there!

What is something you are most proud of?

Getting accepted into an affiliate program early on when I barely had 1,000 members in my Facebook group — and with the main affiliate network, not a sub. The credit card and travel space is competitive, so that early win proved that value and authenticity matter more than follower count.

Meet Rafael Peña…

What’s a fun fact about you?

I used to be a popular underground rapper named JUMZ in New York City.

Why did you start your creator journey?

I’ve always been a creator. Somewhat of a renaissance man. From sketching to poetry to music, I’ve done a little bit of everything. However, I didn’t hone in on creating content and becoming a journalist until I moved to Thailand for a year with my wife back in 2019. as I was documenting my experience as a Black Latino man from the Bronx moving to Bangkok on instagram, an editor in my network reached out and asked me to write one story. That editor was from Travel Noire, and I haven’t turned back since.

What do you enjoy most about your BTA Family?

I have heard all the great things about the community, even attended one of the webinars, but I never took the time to hone in until this year. It’s a great resource for those seeking to have the social media experience without the fluff. It’s very concentrated in the genre I am passionate about the most…travel.

What is your favorite travel destination?

My wife and I love Peruvian food so much, we had our honeymoon there. So definitely all things Peru.

Who inspires you to keep going (i.e family, friends, creator, celebrity, etc)?

Jesus first, but as far as my brothers and sisters on this earth… the activists. The people that stand ten toes down for something. The ones that champion equality for all. The people that stay consistent in their messaging and never sell out or fold. I admire those the most.

What is a piece of advice you would give some starting out on their creator journey?

Comparison is the devil. We all do it, but what makes all of us unique is our personal story. Our testimonies are what set us apart from each other and we should be proud of who we are. Whether you’re making six figures posting selfies or writing novels on your instagram captions, someone out there is getting motivated and becoming inspired by what you do. So be patient and work hard, but let God lead the way.

What is something you are most proud of?

My son. He’s 19 and in a private college studying Mechatronics. I’m still not sure what that is lol However, when you come from the place I came from and the circumstances I had to live under, it’s amazing to see that how I contributed to the person he is becoming. He reminds me each day of all the odds I had to overcome and that I’m still overcoming. He is my motivation.

I’d like to see the community go into schools and community centers from low income neighborhoods and just talk to people about seeing the world. Inspire our brothers and sisters by sharing all the things we’ve seen so far. Real community ish.

Meet Tawa Sulaiman…

What’s a fun fact about you?

I have a twin sister! We tried to switch places, but we don’t look alike so it didn’t work. Don’t recommend.

Why did you start your creator journey?

Travel is my passion. It brings me so much joy. It’s where I feel my whole self. If by sharing it with the entire interwebs and even just one person gets inspired, but beyond that actually books a trip, uncovering an entirely new side of themselves and the world; then I’m a happy girly. But why aim for one, the Nigerian in me must shoot for the moon. I might just land amongst the stars.

What do you enjoy most about your BTA Family?

I love how welcome I feel. Being around other creators who look like me from the audacious newbies (like me) just starting out to the seasoned baddies already mega successful. Shows me I do belong and how far I can go. Always a reminder to clock in!

What is your favorite travel destination?

Cape Town, South Africa! It’s such a beautiful city. It’s hella far from most of the world, but there are so many amazing things to do – stunning wineries, jaw dropping scenery, tantalizing food, vibrant night life, complicated history & present, but the black culture there is elite.Yes the Atlantic Ocean side is cold AF, but the Indian Ocean side is where it’s at. All in all, the city is versatile, colorful and infectious! I’ll continue to go back again and again.

Who inspires you to keep going (i.e family, friends, creator, celebrity, etc)?

My family and friends! They could just be hyping me up, but I doubt they’re wrong. So we move.

What is a piece of advice you would give some starting out on their creator journey?

They’re not wrong when they say just start! Like Right now. Go on..

What is something you are most proud of?

Taking a 1.5 year sabbatical back in 2024 traveling around the world. Best decision I ever made.

Those questions will show you what your audience actually values from you, and that becomes your niche and your offering. Brands look for creators who are authentic and who understand their audience. Plus this’ll help increase your engagement, reach and knowledge of that platform. And you start to get in a routine, because consistency is key.

What is something you are most proud of?

I’m proud that I kept going and built this while being a wife, a mom of four, and working a 9-5. I learned pitching, branding, storytelling, and partnerships along the way. I also tend to lose interest easily, so choosing consistency and continuing to grow was a big personal accomplishment for me. Now I’ve been able to work with travel brands and destinations across multiple countries and create opportunities not only for myself but for other creators as well.

Last question…Is there anything you would like to see in the BTA community? Any workshops, events, content, etc.? Tell us your ideas!

I would love to attend a hands-on, practical learning especially a tangible workshop or course focused on creating strong “hooks” and stopping the scroll. That’s an area I personally want to grow in, and I’m always open to learning and improving my content. I also really like that BTA already creates opportunities for members to connect in real life, like the creator meetups/fam trips (like the Boston one). I think it’s really valuable that members actually get to travel and build relationships in person. I also enjoyed Wavelength. There was a lot of useful information in that. I’d also love to see more regional meetups or events in my city, Huntsville, Alabama. There are a lot of creatives here, but our city sometimes gets overlooked in the creator space, and I think BTA bringing something here would make a real impact and introduce the community to new voices. Looking forward to being part of it and seeing everyone soon!
