Saint-Domingue – The Haitian Revolution

The Haitian Revolution

A successful insurrection by self-liberated slaves against French colonial rule in Saint-Domingue, now the sovereign state of Haiti.

(From Dr. Mowatt): The Haitian Revolution (1791-1804) was an act of self-determination that had major reverberations elsewhere (even plantation owners in the United States wanted to suppress the news of it to prevent further insurrections). Plus, with Black folk from the island of what would become Puerto Rico and was Jamaica traveling and assisting in the revolt gives it a broader meaning.
